Your Five-day Itinerary for Chartering Across the Exumas

Stretching across 130 miles of glistening turquoise waters like scattered pearls in the central Bahamas, the Exumas have captured the hearts of ocean travellers for centuries. An island nation of 365 islands and cays, located southeast of Nassau in the Atlantic waters, the Exumas are wild and breathtakingly beautiful, as many of the islands remain largely undeveloped. A traditional popular winter charter destination, the Exumas are becoming a summer hotspot as well, following recent marina enhancements and additional accessibility for larger superyachts, including Albany Marina’s capacity for 76-metre superyachts and Norman’s Cay’s facilities for superyachts up to 64 metres. Transforming this once shallow-water haven into a world-class superyacht destination, the region remains committed to protecting the environment, highlighted by the protected Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, safeguarding the preservation of the area’s marine environment whilst accommodating the growing demand for Exumas yacht charters. Rivalling the Mediterranean as the go-to destination for the summer, we share a five-day itinerary of what you could expect on your Exumas summer charter.

Day One: Nassau to Highbourne Cay

Embark on your Exumas yacht charter from Nassau’s modern marina before cruising the 30-nautical-mile passage across the renowned Yellow Banks to Highbourne Cay. A privately owned island, it offers an elegant introduction to Exuma’s charms, offering exceptional snorkelling amongst vibrant coral formations and the opportunity to sample freshly baked Bahamian bread at the island’s marina. The protected anchorage of Horseshoe Bay provides a tranquil evening backdrop for the first night of your charter.

Day Two: Allen’s Cay

Wake up to your crew cruising south to Allen’s Cay, home to the endemic Bahamian rock iguanas that have become synonymous with Exuma wildlife encounters. These prehistoric creatures roam freely across stunning beaches, providing many opportunities for photographs. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely exploration of the surrounding cays’ secluded beaches and excellent snorkelling grounds, where beautiful coral gardens teem with tropical marine life.

Day Three: Staniel Cay & Big Major Cay

Cruise to the legendary Big Major Cay early in the morning for the unmissable and quintessential Exuma experience: swimming with the famous pigs in crystal-clear waters. Be sure you bring plenty of snacks for them! Afterwards, continue on to nearby Thunderball Grotto, the underwater cave system immortalised in James Bond films, for an afternoon of snorkelling and diving. End your day at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, a charming establishment perfect for evening dining and socialising with fellow charterers.

Day Four: Compass Cay

Head to Compass Cay to visit its remarkable marine sanctuary, where docile nurse sharks silently glide through the marina waters, offering safe swimming encounters for more adventurous charterers. Afterwards, head ashore for an afternoon of exploration. The island’s hiking trails lead to elevated viewpoints showcasing the Exumas’ breathtaking topography, whilst its secluded beaches provide the ideal setting for beach picnics prepared by your private chef.

Day Five: Norman’s Cay

Conclude your Exumas yacht charter at the historically significant Norman’s Cay (once an infamous smuggler’s base!), where a sunken aircraft wreck serves as an extraordinary diving site, complete with magnificent marine life. The island’s sandy beaches and blue lagoons serve as the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of final relaxation before your return journey to Nassau.
